Lavender Haze
£3.50
By Elena Cobb
This piece is available in the Piano Recital Piano Solos Book 1
According to one of the reviews “absorbing but not too demanding performance piece for students at an intermediate level”, the style of Lavender Haze can be described as Pop or even cinematic as it offers to explore a wider range of expression in playing.
Rick –
This piece seems to grow on me after repeated hearings – and playings. As a composer myself, it is one of those that I wish I had written myself. It is hard to categorize; Cobb describes it as jazz, and perhaps it is – in the American “big band” sense. I am reminded of the old 78 rpm recordings of Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra, and the opening chordal sweep is reminiscent of their saxophone-heavy sound – what we Americans call “schmaltzy”. The parallel added-sixth chords give the piece a richness reminiscent of the Debussy Sarabande – but less difficult, since it is all on the white keys.
I think this piece would be a hit with adult pianists as well. Some have remarked that they have used this as a church offertory, and I can see that as a possibility. Equal in its inspiration and its workmanship, it will stay in the minds and hearts of those who play it.
I hope we are treated to more work in this style.
